Project theory: intro to project cycle

Project
  • temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service
  • sequence of unique, complex, and connected activities having one goal or purpose an complete at a specific time (has a deadline) within a budget, and according to specifications.

Software development life cycle
project identification and selection > project intuiting and planning> analysis> logical design> physical design> implementation> maintenance

Project Management Criteria
  • projects are oriented towards a goal
  • there is something unique about the project
  • has a finite duration
  • projects require coordination of interrelated activities 
  • project management is a set of principles and tools for:
    • defining
    • planning
    • executing
    • controlling
    • completing
  • project management organizes your approach
  • generates a credible schedule
  • track progress and control your project
  • identify where to focus your efforts
  • identify problems early- before they are crisis
  • saves you time and money
  • if you fail to plan, plan to fail
Project Phases
  1. Assessment
    • observing a problem, analyzing it
      • asking questions: who?, for whom? with whom?, what?, where?, why?, when?
  2. Planning
    • needs analysis, analysis of the organization, its values, activities, and relevancy; motivation; definition of aims (general) and concrete objectives
    • selection of methodology- your beliefs, thoughts, opinions
    • plan of activities- make a schedule; be organized
    • resources: human, financial, material, time
    • organization of the project: team or individual
      • who are you collaborating with?
    • outline of the project
    • risks assessment strategy
    • Concrete objectives
      • SMART- Special Measurable Achievable Realistic Time
